What Are You Getting Yourself Into?

Checking out a new church is tricky. You wonder what it'll be like. What they'll believe. What they'll expect of you and what they'll offer for kids. Here's a list of FAQs we hope can prepare you for your first visit to Revolution.

What is a worship service like at Revolution?

Please join us for worship every Sunday at 11:30a.  The coffee is always hot, and the ambiance is very casual.   The sermon, which is intended to be inspiring and challenging, usually lasts 20-30 minutes.  We share Holy Communion every week.  We are located in the corner of 40th and Washington, at 500 W. 40th St. Kansas City, Missouri 64111.

If 11:30am doesn't work for you, we hope you can visit our other site in Waldo, Keystone Church. Keystone is located at 406 W. 74th St, Kansas City, MO 64114. We have two additional worship opportunities available at this site, at 8:45 and 10am.

What is Revolution's mission?

We're creating Christ-like culture in Kansas City where grace comes first and ordinary people are transformed by Christ to transform the world.

These Five Words speak to the kind of church we're hoping to become:

Following Jesus is a journey of growth and transformation. This process is proactive; we will engage daily in the disciplines of faith: prayer and meditation, studying the scriptures, regular worship, intentional community, and sacrificial service.

We will go out of our way to make sure everyone is welcome. We will celebrate our unity in diversity. We are old and young, rich and poor, straight and gay, liberal and conservative, married, single, and divorced, black, white, and brown, and most of all, we are One in Christ Jesus who welcomes us all the same.
We will pursue God with honesty and integrity.  Questions and doubts will always be welcome.  We readily confess that we do not have all the answers, but we are all on a journey of growth and understanding.

Jesus didn’t do ministry alone, and neither should we.  Our culture will constantly produce opportunities for community to flourish.  From small groups and bible studies to service teams and social opportunities, we’re not fulfilling our mission unless we experience God in community.

We will be generous with our money. We will carefully craft a simple budget with no frills so that every gift reaches its greatest potential to create meaningful ministries with our children and youth, to offer meals to the hungry in Kansas City, to cultivate community in our church, and to support our initiatives worldwide.

What does Revolution believe?

We believe that God reaches out to us in different ways. God is the creator of the universe and giver of all that is good. God is the savior—known boldly and intimately in Jesus and his life, death, and resurrection—who shows us how to live and love. God is the Spirit who enables us to make a difference in our world and in the lives of others.

We believe that the Bible is the primary source of Christian doctrine. It is a beautiful, God-inspired, complex, and challenging book. We believe that its message of grace matters most when we live it out in a way that people’s lives are changed (our own lives included).

We believe that sin, both what we have done and what we have failed to do—the Bible calls it “missing the mark”—describes the reality that things are not as they should be: we are self-obsessed, broken, fearful, and oppressive. It’s what Jesus came to save us from.

We believe that grace is the unearned love, honesty, and compassion that God freely gives and shows us in Jesus. It’s how Jesus saves us, heals us, sets us free, and increases our capacity for love.

We believe that we need each other. Whether single, married, divorced or widowed, it’s better to follow God with friends than it is by ourselves.

We believe that the goal of church is not to make people more religious but to help people fall more in love with God and therefore become more fully human.

We believe that we are called to reach out to our neighbors both locally and globally and serve them in ways that make a difference.

We believe that spiritual practices like prayer, reading the Bible, participating in small groups, fasting, and tithing are vital to our faith.

We are a United Methodist congregation, and we welcome people from all religious (and non-religious) backgrounds.  You don’t have to be United Methodist to come here, and you don’t have to become United Methodist to belong here.

What's going on at Revolution for the kids?

Having meaningful opportunities to explore the questions of faith is vitally important for children.  Our kids ministry, RevKids, offers lots of structured and creative ways for children to discover God's love, explore their faith, and learn how to practice kindness in their daily lives.  Every Sunday morning during the worship hour, "rotations" travel in groups exploring three areas:

* Music and Movement

* Art, Science, and Cooking

* Story and Drama

This programming is available for all kids, ages 3-12.  We also have a professionally-staffed nursery for infants and crawlers, and a fun, dynamic youth group (Impact!) for Junior High and High Schoolers.

What is Revolution's relationship to Westport Methodist Church and to Keystone Church in Waldo?

The name above Revolution's front door still says "Westport Methodist Church," which is great, because Westport Methodist and Revolution are one and the same.  In 2003, after many tough years of decline, the people of Westport Methodist decided to invest what time and money they had left to give birth to a new congregation.  Two years later, Revolution was born, and to this day, a handful of long-time Westport Methodist members call Revolution home.  We love being a multi-generational community!

Keystone Church launched in the spring of 2012 as a merger between Broadway UMC (a 107 year-old congregation) and Redemption (a new community launched by Broadway UMC and Revolution members). Both church sites share the same lead pastor, Steven Jones . Keystone is located in the Waldo area of Kansas City. It is a dynamic and authentic church community, very similar to its sister church, Revolution.  We share leaders and small groups, and from time to time, we also plan outreach and social gatherings together.
